Computing

Intent:

What we are trying to achieve

  • Model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely.
  • Pupils to be creators not consumers.
  • Our broad curriculum encompassing computer science, information technology and digital literacy reflects this.
  • Pupils to understand that there is always a choice with using technology and as a school we utilise technology (especially social media) to model positive use.
  • Understand the accessibility opportunities technology can provide and pupils to be fluent with a range of tools to best express their understanding.
  • By Upper Key Stage 2, children to have the independence and confidence to choose the best tool to fulfil tasks and challenges.

Implementation:

Vision into practice.

All year groups follow the Kapow Primary Computing Curriculum, which encompasses the National Curriculum Objectives for Computing, information Technology, Computer Science and Digital Literacy.

Half-termly units will include:

  • Online safety
  • Data handling
  • Creating media
  • Programming
  • Computing systems and networks

From the moment they enter Reception children at Weaverham Forest come into contact with a range of technology, and we want them to embrace this with open arms. The use of interactive whiteboards and Ipads at this young age also benefits their learning experiences.

At the beginning of Year 1 pupils are taught how to turn on and login to the school network om a laptop, and this skill as built upon across their time in school. Word processing and presentation software are by-products of school's cross-curricular approach to computing.

Finding the right balance with technology is key, we feel the way we implement computing helps children realise this need and build on it.

They will evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems

Please see the attached file for an overview of our school's Computing curriculum, delivered via the Kapow framework.

Units and the time period at which they are delivered may fluctuate from one year to the next*

Impact:

On pupils

  • We encourage our children to enjoy and value the curriculum we deliver. Constantly ask the why behind their learning and not just the how.
  • Learners to discuss, reflect and appreciate the impact computing has on their learning, development and well being.
  • Develop confidence when using a range of computing equipment and use it for a variety of activities across the curriculum.
  • Move with the rapidly changing technological world and build on existing skills.
  • Teach a progressive curriculum, modelling skills throughout.

EYFS
