Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screening Check is a short, one-to-one activity that helps us see how well your child can use phonics to read words. During the check, your child will be asked to read a list of words out loud to their teacher – some are real words and some are Alien (made-up), so the focus is on sounding them out rather than remembering them. It usually takes only a few minutes and is done in a familiar, supportive setting so children feel at ease. In 2027, all Year 1 children will take the check during week commencing Monday 14th June 2027, and if a child doesn’t quite meet the expected level, they’ll have another chance in Year 2.

Homework

Whilst homework is not formally set as such in Year 1, it is expected that all children read at least 4 times a week (mixture of weekly Sounds Write phonics text and reading-for-pleasure book) with an adult and log what they have read on on the BoomReader App. Early reading throughout the year is extremely important, as is hearing others read to them. Reading quality stories to children not only introduces them to a wide range of vocabulary but supports their communication and language skills. The natural conversations that arise when sharing books also develop children's understanding and comprehension skills and can foster a love of reading for life. To develop children's confidence and fluency, we encourage them to read the same book more than once. Reading books will be changed each Thursday. Throughout Year 1, I will set a weekly online game on Power Maths. This activity allows children to build their confidence by working through challenges from Bronze level up to Gold level. Below is the link for the log-in page for Power Maths.

I will also set a weekly phonics, grammar or spelling task in homework books to support and reinforce the learning taking place in class. These activities are designed to help children practise key skills and retain their learning. Homework will be set each Thursday and should be returned by the following Tuesday.

Other Useful Information

On the days that children have PE, they will come in wearing their full PE . This allows us to be flexible according to the weather, however, we will aim to complete sessions on a Thursday.
