Physical Education
Intent:
At Weaverham Forest Primary School, the aim of Physical Education in our school is to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision.
It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all.
We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle.
Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop the School Games Values of determination, passion, respect, honesty, self-belief and teamwork.
We offer an inclusive approach towards competitive sport so that all children, no matter ability or experience who are willing, will have opportunities to compete against others either with a focus on enjoyment (ASPIRE and "give it a go") or personal best (INSPIRE and "compete to win!").
Implementation:
We cover the National Curriculum PE objectives using the 'Teaching and Assessing High Quality PE Lessons in Primary Settings' by Focus Education. This is a comprehensive scheme of work for Years 1 - 6 where skills and understanding are taught through units of work aimed at providing opportunities to develop and achieve in all areas of Physical Education and sport.
Supplementary resources that enhance our planning are:
- The New Zealand Fundamental Skills (Developing fundamental movement skills | Sport New Zealand - Ihi Aotearoa (sportnz.org.nz)
- Youth Sport Trust TOPS PE cards as a delivery and planning tool to ensure all pupils get a rich and balanced curriculum.
- Enrich Education UK OAA (orienteering)
Swimming instruction is provided across year groups 2, 3 and 4 and is provided by Weaverham community pool through qualified instruction, with top up in Year 6 for pupils that need it who have yet to meet the National Curriculum objectives.
Collaborative co-delivery 6-week blocks of learning with the Weaverham High School/Primary Link PE Specialist are completed to offer valuable CPD to staff as well as ensuring sufficient coverage and learning is developed.
To engage those learners who generally have a lower level of physical literacy, we provide opportunities to participate in festivals with a focus on School Games values rather than a traditional scoring system.
In EYFS, we follow the Development Matters framework areas of Physical Development across our nursery and reception classes. Please see attached Long Term Plan below for breakdown of specific areas.
