Welcome to Reception Class

Teacher - Mr Proctor (Ms Lea Tuesdays)

Teaching Assistant - Mrs Gadsby

Welcome to our Reception Class Page.

We are so excited to welcome you to our school, and this is the place where key information, messages, updates and files to download can be found.

Should any queries or questions you have not be answered on here, we can always be contacted at recteach@weaverhamforest.cheshire.sch.uk

Yearly Overview

In Reception most of the learning takes place whilst the children are playing, with the adults supporting and extending through our interactions. We also like, in some instances, to be guided by the children's interests, so planning is sometimes fluid and not set in stone. However, please find below an overview on some of the topics we will be learning about this academic year.

Phonics & Reading

We follow the Phonics programme Sounds~Write, with Phonics sessions taking place daily. We then follow Phonics with Reading. The children will read a book designed to support the Phonics teaching daily, in a small group, with an adult. This book, along with a Reading for Pleasure book, will be sent home every Friday. At the start of the year the reading texts may appear somewhat challenging and 'tricky,' however, it is not expected for your child to be able to read from "cover to cover" in one go. The importance is that they become more familiar with sounds to the point where they may share, "that words starts with a _ sound" even when reading is not on their mind!

What is perhaps the most challenging yet important part of Phonics and Reading is that the children's role models (adults who read with and to them) model the correct pronunciation of sounds wherever possible. Sometimes (speaking from experience here!) it cannot be a lot different from when we were taught at school. A video guide of how to pronounce the main sounds can be found towards the bottom of the page, but by all means get in touch if you have a query on anything to do with letter sounds and how to make them.

Literacy

Each half term we have a focus story book. We explore this book in lots of detail and the children will become very familiar with it. Throughout the half term, we have lots of activities and learning linked to the book.

Maths

This academic year school will follow the Power Maths program of study for maths learning (see overview below).

We will begin by exploring numbers to 5 in detail, moving all the way to beyond 10 by the summer term. We will also explore: shape, space and measure. Please find a short video explaining the importance of Early Number Sense below.

Other Information

Our PE session takes place on a Thursday so children will need to arrive in school in PE kits on that day.

Reading books will be sent out (and subsequently swapped) on Fridays.

Please find below videos on the pronunciation of the sounds the children will be learning and the importance of Early Number Sense.
