Welcome to Year 1

Teacher - Mr Proctor (Mr Hartley-Chambers Tuesday)

Miss Lord

Please see below for our yearly overview

Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screen Check is taken by all children at the end of Year 1. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how a child is progressing in Phonics and ultimately reading. It will help to identify whether a child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.

This will take place across the week commencing 9th June 2025.

This is a link to the current government guidance

We will be doing lots of practice in school, however, if you would like your child to have extra practise at home they will have their Spelling Shed & Teach Your Monster username and password readily available to use.

You will see the letter that has been sent out to all parents containing additional information at the bottom of this page, and an information meeting will be held closer to the time.

Homework

Whilst homework is not formally set as such in Year 1, it is expected that all children read at least 5 times a week (mixture of weekly phonics text and reading for pleasure book) with an adult and log what they have read on Boom Reader. Early reading throughout the year is extremely important, as is hearing others read to them. Reading quality stories to children not only introduces them to a wide range of vocabulary but supports their communication and language skills. The natural conversations that arise when sharing books also develop children's understanding and comprehension skills and can foster a love of reading later in life.

Additionally Spelling Shed & Teach Your Monster APPs will have new tasks assigned each Friday that will reinforce the work in phonics and maths each week.

Other Useful Information

PE kits should be in at the beginning of the week and left in school.  This allows us to be flexible according to the weather, however, we will aim to complete sessions on a Monday and a Friday.

Project homework and knowledge organisers will be available to view every term on this webpage.
